Paragraph counter
How many paragraphs — and are any of them walls?
A paragraph here is a block of text separated by a blank line, the way editors and content systems count. Paste your text for the paragraph count, the average words per paragraph, and your longest paragraph named and shamed.

How paragraphs are counted
Paragraphs are split on blank lines — one or more empty lines between blocks. A single line break inside a block (as in an address or a poem) does not start a new paragraph. This matches how Word, Google Docs (with Enter pressed twice), Markdown and most CMS editors structure text. If you write with single Enter presses between paragraphs, your whole text is one block here — paste it into any editor and add the blank lines to see the true count.
How long should a paragraph be?
On the web, 40–80 words is a comfortable average: long enough to develop one idea, short enough to scan on a phone. Print essays run longer. The number that matters most is the longest one — a single 250-word block in an otherwise airy article is where readers quietly leave. Split it where the idea turns.
Frequently asked questions
- Do headings and list items count as paragraphs?
- If they are separated by blank lines, yes — each block counts. That matches how a reader experiences the page structure.
- Can I count paragraphs in a whole document?
- Copy the document text and paste it here; the count runs locally in your browser, so length is not a problem. For words, sentences and more in one place, use the word counter.
